This chapter describes how you can retrieve a backup from the server if it no longer starts. Depending on the server type, this is either easy or difficult to do. In case of hardware damage, it may be impossible to access the file system at all.
Note: The backup file can also be found on Antcas Hub. Please note that it will be automatically deleted after 90 days.
To begin with the rescue, you first need a screen with an HDMI or VGA cable. This varies depending on the server type. You should also use a standard keyboard.
Connect the screen and keyboard to the server. Then restart the server and wait to see if the server boots up to the login window. Depending on the network configuration, this process can take several minutes.
If the operating system starts and a login appears, it may be just an incorrectly set IP address. You can reset this using the recovery method described in the chapter Network.
If an image is displayed but the server does not start, you may need to confirm a message with F1. After that, the server may continue to boot up.

If the server does not start despite displaying an image, you can try to access the data using Ubuntu Live Image. Download Ubuntu and copy the data to an empty USB stick. The stick must be formatted with FAT32 and must not be larger than 32 GB. For servers of older generations, UEFI may need to be activated in the BIOS to read the stick. Optionally, you can also write the Boot MBR.
To start via USB stick, you must call up the so-called BBS-Boot menu. This is possible with the keys ESC, F2, F7 or F11. The key differs depending on the server type and hardware manufacturer.
If you can access the file system, the backup is located under /var/antcas/dat/backup/.
